With an anti-glare (AG) coated protection glass, a microscopically rough surface laminated onto the topmost of display can diffuse glare. The chemically etched glass that has a slightly textured finish can reduce reflection by scattering light directed on its surface. It can soften the image of direct light sources visible in the reflection of the viewing area.

Each surface in front of the display, front of a window, back of the window, etc., creates surface reflections. Each surface and its "index of refraction" creates an reflective loss to the image. Especially touch screens and filters are causing significant problems. The total of reflective loss surfaces, in conjunction with ambient light, drastically lowers the "effective contrast ratio". With anti reflection coating on glass or display surface, reflection can be minimized to typically less then 1 %. Anti Reflection Coating can be realized as hard coating or film coating. Anti reflective enhancement is a very effective method to improve the visibility of a display because it helps to increase the contrast ratio. The human eye can distinguish different contrast levels much better then different brightness levels. Therefore improving the contrast has a significantly more positive effect on visibility then higher brightness.
